Designers’ Saturday

BE CREATIVE WITH SWISSCDF

THE CONCEPT

The «Designers’ Saturday» (DS) concept was suggested to SWISS KRONO AG. by «the world’s most beautiful chair» created by the Germany company Formaat in Mainz. One material, 4 elements and few minutes to assemble with no tools. From this combination of simplicity and functionality, the SWISS KRONO AG. marketing team took inspiration to organize a creative contest for students and apprentices, in order to promote not only the experience but also the functionality of SWISSCDF within the DS event.

YOUNG CREATIVE MINDS

By involving future designers from the first-year and second-year classes of the Upper School of Arts and Design in Luzern (Switzerland) and the budding joiners from the third-year and fourth-year classes of the professional school in Langenthal, this unusual and peculiar initiative has benefited from the contribution of creative minds.

CONTEST OBJECTIVES

The mission for participants was to design a “snap-mount” piece of furniture that could be assembled with no glue, screws or hardware. The product had to be made using raw or white-coated SWISSCDF panels. The first step was to make a 1:5 cardboard model to allow the jury to compare the different projects for the awarding ceremony.

EVALUATION OF 1:5 MODELS

On August 8, 2014, a qualified jury comprised of members from academia, design and business evaluated and awarded the 1:5 models in terms of visual impact, functionality and originality. Also the visitors of Designers’ Saturday had the opportunity to see all models.

FROM WINNING MODEL TO FINISHED PRODUCT

The award winners were manufactured at full scale by their young designers, independently or with the support of SWISS KRONO AG, to be presented at the Designers’ Saturday event.

SWISS DESIGN ICONS AT THE SWISSCDF CONTEST

SWISS KRONO AG was proud to involve renowned Swiss designers like Christophe Marchand and the Fries & Zumbühl studio. The three experts supported the contest with their competence and as jury members. Furthermore, both studios designed a snap-mount item, also presented at the Designers’ Saturday.
